case study #1

Starting from Scratch

It’s a fun question to ask yourself: If you could work on any project right now, what would it be?

For me, it was this book on Jonathan Porretta by award-winning arts journalist Marcie Sillman. But instead of just dreaming about it, I figured out how to make it happen.

The Cornerstone of the Project

The Book

For this 136-page, hard-cover book, with text by award-winning journalist Marcie Sillman and more than 200 photos, I served as:

  • editor
  • project manager
  • designer
  • publisher
Marketing: Assets for social media

The Video Book Trailer

This one-minute video in AfterEffects was the first I’d ever created.

What I found so interesting was the power of the background music. We tried five different scores, and each score demanded I adjust the video’s rhythm and content.

Marketing: Where the info is

The Website

Our goal for the website would be a static repository of essential information, rather than an active commercial site.

My clean design matches the book. I hand-coded this myself (HTML and CSS).

Marketing: Materials for several campaigns

Printed Collateral

I wrote and designed printed collateral as well:

  • launch-party invitations
  • fact sheets
  • marketing plan
  • meeting materials
  • donor prospectus
  • book-release postcards
  • book-talk postcards
  • poster
Marketing: Media relations & event planning

I learned PR from one of the best in Seattle, so I knew the care each step required. The highlights:

  • KING 5 TV appearance
  • Elliott Bay Book Company talk
  • Seattle Magazine’s Must List
  • Book Launch Party at the Ruins
